Federal Employees Retirement System

Federal civilian employees who were first hired after December 31, 1983 are automatically covered under Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) and Social Security. Under FERS, employees only have to satisfy the first condition (five years of creditable service) to be eligible for an immediate annuity. Employees also must be covered by FERS when they retire, but no minimum final period of service is required.

Eligibility Requirements: To retire and draw an immediate annuity, employees also must meet one of the specified combinations of minimum age and service requirements, as well as any special requirements that may be applicable to the type of retirement they are taking.
